Howard County was officially founded 1851 when it became the 21st of the 23 counties in Maryland but It has a much longer history. Uniquely, the county is also home to the B & O railroad, the oldest surviving railroad station in the nation and one of the oldest in the world. Babe Ruth, who was from Baltimore, even got married in Ellicott City. Columbia is the largest city in Howard County and was developed by a gentleman named James Rouse who is also the grandfather of famous Actor Ed Norton. Rouse was a pioneer in how he envisioned American suburbs and Columbia was and still is one of the largest planned communities in the country. Columbia is also known for the over 50 year-old Merriweather Post Pavilion that has hosted everyone from Jimi Hendrix, The Foo Fighters, and Phish to Led Zeppelin and The Who.
